How and why should I use question ‘timers’?

Each question can have a ‘timer’ associated with it. The timer options are shown below.

The countdown timer (which can be shown or hidden) can do one of the following:

  1. Simply display a countdown timer on the page
  2. Automatically progress to the next page when the countdown has elapsed
  3. Prevent page progression until the countdown has elapsed

This allows you to create some more complex questionnaires.

Example 1 : Create an image slideshow
Some questionnaire require participants to view a set of images in a sequence (random or otherwise) and then ask questions about the image set. e.g. How did they make you feel?

You can do this in the following manner:

  1. Add an image to each question in a section.
  2. Add a time to each question for ‘x’ seconds
  3. Choose the ‘auto progress to next page’ option
  4. Set the section to show 1 question per page

This will then create a slideshow which presents each image to the participants for ‘x’ seconds before moving on automatically to the next one. You can randomise the images by picking the relevant option in the section settings.

Example 2 : Force participant reflection for ‘x’ minutes
If you wish participants to reflect on a piece of information / image / situation etc.. for ‘x’ minutes, you can use the ‘Prevent page progression’ timer option to do this. The ‘next page’ option is then removed until the timer has elapsed.
