Pre-Screening Study: Emotive content and immersion in cinema

What is the research about?

This study is looking at emotions induced while watching specific film clips. This is with a view to creating a validated-list of clips designed to elicit certain emotions whilst watching. This will be used in a later study.

What will happen to me if I take part?

You will be asked to watch a number of film clips, following each you will complete a short questionnaire on the emotions that were experienced during the clip. This experiment should take approximately 1 hour.

Are there any benefits in my taking part?

You will receive 4 credits for taking part in this experiment.

Are there any risks involved?

The risks in this study have been kept to a minimum and there are no more risks than would be encountered in everyday life. However, please note, there may be flashing lights/images throughout the study.

This study will contain a range of specifically chosen, emotionally inducing film clips. All content adheres to BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) guidelines, and will be rated no higher than 18. If you have any concerns regarding this, please contact the researcher.

Will my participation be confidential?

This study fully complies with the Data Protection Act and University Policy. Data will be used only for the purpose of this study and only named researchers will have access to your data. Any identifying information will be stored separately and securely from your data. Information will be kept fully confidential. All information will be handled in accordance with the Data Protection Act.

What happens if I change my mind?

You have the right to withdraw from the study at any time by stopping the task. Withdrawing from the study will not result in any penalties or affect any aspect of your study at the university. If you have any questions please email the researcher.
